Development of the community of McKenzie Lake continues up to the present day, even though it started in the 1984. Homes along the lake in the community are the most expensive and sought-after, of course, and access is controlled by a gate for the island which extends into it. McKenzie Lake has a large green space at the center of the community, as well as many greenbelts and pathways, some of which lead out into the banks of the Bow River, which the community neighbors. Several small lakes lie in bunches in this area and on the opposite bank residents can enjoy extensive trails. Those interested in golfing will find the McKenzie Meadows Golf Club as exclusive as it is extensive.

McKenzie Lake is located in close proximity to two major shopping centers: the Deer Valley Shopping Centre and the Southpointe Shopping Centre, as well as the Canyon Meadows Cinemas and Landmark Cinemas 10. For families looking for fun the Shakers Fun Centre, Laser Quest and Kart World Family Fun Centre are only a short drive away.
